Education
Fernando
Savater by Manuela Falero
Savater is known for his activism in the fields of ethics, religions,
and the fight against terrorism. He graduated in Spanish and philosophy, and is
the author of over 50 works, among essays, prose, and theater, besides
countless journalistic articles.
He regards philosophy as a permanent critic activity to express
subjectivity and provoke. Famous for his specialization in ethics, he defends
an ethics of “desire" instead of an ethic of “duty".
He's an important theorist in the field of education. In his most famous
book Wake Up and Read, the value of education and ethics for my children, he
speaks directly to the protagonists in education, sharing perplexities and
hopes. He began his careers as a professor at the Autonomous University of
Madrid, until he was removed by Franco's dictatorial regime. In the following
years, he lived in a self-exile in France. Back to Spain, he concluded his
Master's degree in 1975 with a dissertation about Nietzsche and resumed his teaching
activities at the Ethics Cathedra at the University of the Basque Country.
Since 1995, he's a philosophy professor at Complutense University of
Madrid and, nowadays, he's also director for the cultural Magazine Claves de
Razón Prática.
Always involved in cultural, aesthetic and political controversies in
Spain, he was one of the founders of the liberal party Unión Progresso y
Democracia, in 2007. In his most recent book, ¡No te prives! Defensa de
la ciudadania, he questions the rights and duties of democratic citizenship
in a context of political distrust.
Fernando Savater is openly influenced by Nietzsche, Cioran and Spinoza,
and his school of thought was categorized as radical anti-authoritarian. In
1982, he won the National Essay Award in Spain, with La tarea del héroe,
in which he argues that ethics must be freed from connections with morality,
establishing itself as an open autonomous event.

Good work! Thank you for your contribution!
